Abstract

AbstractA model is proposed (and justified) for predicting the size of the fusion zone (FZ) and the size of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of deep penetration welds. The approach suggested in this presentation is the non-dimensional deep penetration counterpart of the method first put forward by Christensen et al. [1] for the shallow penetration arc welding processes. Measured electron beam weld FZ and HAZ sizes are compared to predicted values as a basis for estimating adjustments to the calculations that are necessary because of assumptions in the model. The application of this work to FEA (finite element analysis) deep penetration weld modelling is discussed at some length.
