Abstract

A model for horse movement is presented. The horse, as a mechanical system, has a dynamic “personality” determined by the mass, stiffness, and damping of the system. This spring-mass-damper (SMD)personality is expressed in the period, amplitude, and frequency responses of the system to force input. Movement in the horizontal sense is modeled as a self-excited SMD system, while movement in the vertical senseis modeled as an impulse forced SMD system.
