Abstract
Abstract The extensive collections of data sets in many geographical information systems (GIS) make facilities for their management desirable. A data model for a GIS at the level of data sets and processing modules is presented. Use of a generic hierarchy accommodates diversity in the types of data sets present and the varying levels of detail of description. A system architecture of a GIS resource directory based on the data model is sketched. By capturing and making accessible information on available data sets and processing modules, the resource directory database also supports advanced usages such as advisory systems to navigate to a desired data set and the simple expression of operations.
