Abstract
As the demands to reduce the environmental impact of oil and gas operations increase in the Arctic region, the need to identify suitable waste handling systems becomes more essential. The aim of this paper is to propose a methodology for identifying a suitable drilling waste handling system, by considering the distinctive operating conditions of the Arctic region. The proposed methodology can help the user to explore and assess waste minimisation, handling, treatment, and disposal techniques for Arctic drilling that fit a wide range of operating requirements and needs. By making use of the proposed methodology, a suitable waste handling system that ensures sustainability and fulfils health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards can be recommended. The application of the methodology is demonstrated by a case study of drilling waste handling practices in the Johan Castberg oil and gas field, located in the Barents Sea.
