Abstract

A low frequency a.c. optical detection system using a single vacuum photoemissive detector and incorporating a phase sensitive detector is described. The system formed part of a sensitive optical lever dilatometer. A change in relative intensity of two beams of approximately 002% of the maximum could be measured; this corresponded to a change of approximately 100 pm in the length of a specimen.
