Abstract

Cluster analysis is used in a wide variety of fields and consequently there are many different approaches to the problem of grouping similar objects. Cormack (1971) classified clustering techniques into five categories: hierarchical, optimization, density-seeking, clumping, and others, which include ordination, multidimensional scaling, and graphical procedures. The projection method proposed here falls into the last category, and is related to the plotting method of Andrews (1972). Let x = (xl, x2, ..., Xk)' represent measurements on k variables of an object. Andrews (1972) suggested that x could be represented by the function
