Abstract

A mathematical model of cell and bacterial growth and regression is presented. The model is, in part, composed of tentative laws of growth and regression. The mathematical solutions of the model were obtained; they indicate the factors which affect various aspects of growth and regression behavior. The model was partly validated by applying it to a cancerous tumor experiment and to two L-cell experiments. The model contains the effects of nutrients, spatial limitations, metabolism and inhibitors. The model yields, e.g., the well known sigmoid-shaped growth curve. An analog computer was used in the model validation study.
