Abstract

On December 11, 1965, at 0505 MET an ESRO Centaure rocket (ESRO C07/2) was launched from the range of Salto di Quirra, Sardinia, carrying a quadrupole mass filter. The number densities of N2, O2, O, and Ar were determined in the altitude range from 112 to 158 km. A high content of atomic oxygen was found, as can be seen from the number density ratio n(O)/n(O2) = 7.3 at 150 km. The relative Ar concentration was low, this indicating an onset of diffusive separation well below 110 km.
