Abstract
Beetle remains recovered from medieval deposits at Austin Friars, Leicester, were identified as Gyrinus colymbus. This species is extinct in Britain today and it probably disappeared during the episode of climatic deterioration between 1550 and 1850 A.D. when lower mean annual temperatures could have eliminated insects living at the limits of their climatic ranges. Subsequent re‐immigration accompanying the climatic improvement would have been prevented by the English Channel.
