Abstract
It is shown that the existence of axions arising from a Peccei-Quinn symmetry which is already broken at the onset of inflation implies an upper limit on the energy density V during inflation V 1 4 < 5 × 10 −5m Pl , where m Pl is the Planck energy. The limit comes from requiring that isocurvature perturbations in the axion density should not produce a microwave background anisotropy in excess of the observational limit.
