Abstract

A modified patch antenna loaded with multiple number of slits for broadband high gain application is proposed. The electrical lateral dimensions of the proposed patch are $$4 6\;{\text{mm}} \times 36.5\;{\text{mm}} \times 1.6\;{\text{mm}}$$ ( $$0.51\lambda_{0} \times 0.40\lambda_{0} \times 0.02\lambda_{0} ),\lambda _{0}$$ is the free space wavelength at (3.3 GHz) lowest simulated resonant frequency of the proposed antenna. The proposed antenna offers two frequency bands of 2.23 GHz (5.09–7.32 GHz) and 0.34 GHz (7.52–7.86 GHz) at 6.205 GHz and 7.69 GHz respectively. The maximum broad frequency band of 2.23 GHz with percentage bandwidth of 35.91% is achieved. A peak gain of 8.45 dBi is achieved. For validation of proposed antenna results, three different types of modified patches are used above the rectangular, circular and square ground planes. Patch type III with square shaped ground plane is fabricated for better performance. The simulated and measured results are in good agreement. It can be used in ISM band, WLAN, WiMAX and satellite communications.
