Abstract

Q kJcholars have given a good deal of attention to the friendship and literary harmony between Fet and Tolstoy. Less studied but no less intriguing are the differences that eventually drove the two writers apart.1 They first met at Ivan Turgenev's apartment in Petersburg, at the beginning of 1856. Previously ignorant of the poetry of Fet (who had made his literary debut in 1840), Tolstoy would soon marvel at its lyric audacity.2 The immediate post Crimean War period in Russia was a time of debate about literature's relation to social problems.
