Yet, only during the past twenty years has knowledge of the principles of preservation of blood and of immunohematology made possible blood transfusion in the modern sense. Yet this very essential therapeutic procedure is still beset with many controversial problems, and is subject to misuse and abuse on the part of misinformed physicians. Some of these difficulties stem from the apparent simplicity of blood transfusion as it was performed in the early 1930's and from ignorance of the risks involved....
