Abstract
Exact graphical descriptions of isothermal, isobaric multiple phase volumetric behavior are presented. Solutions for the distribution of n phases are given for n and n-1 component systems, where n = 2, 3, or 4. These graphical representations are derived from the combination of volumetric, mass and component material balances, which yields linear expressions for phase volumes as a function of the apparent density of the mixture. Experimental results for the 3-phase and 4-phase volumetric behavior of the CO 2/C 14H 30 and CO 2/C 14H 30/H 2O systems, respectively, demonstrate the capabilities of these simple graphs to serve not only as a predictive tool for multiple phase behavior, but also as a thermodynamic consistency test for experimental data.
