Abstract
A novel adsorption model based on multi-layer adsorption reactions and the heterogeneity of adsorbents is developed, which is more general and provides a more complete insight into the adsorption phenomena than Do and Do's model. There are many essential properties (such as layer thickness, layer coverage, effective coverage, deactivated fraction, isosteric heat and equilibrium constants of adsorption) available in this proposed multi-layer adsorption model but not available in the traditional models. The fitting results of the proposed model fit the literature data better than the results from Do and Do's model. The optimal parameters of this multi-layer adsorption model for various samples of activated carbon and zeolite were obtained. The effects of the polarity and molecular weight on the interaction between adsorbate and adsorbent, as well as both adsorbate and adsorbate in the adsorption and desorption processes were also investigated.
