Abstract

A relatively simple extraction procedure for the comprehensive screening of acid, neutral, and many basic drugs is described. The procedure Involves a single extraction into toluene-ether, evaporation, and combined dissolution and clean-up of the residue using ethanol and hexane. The ethanol phase Is used for analysis by gas chromatography using a flame-Ionization detector. More than 80 components have been detected and identified In blood by the procedure. The procedure can be used as a routine screen In clinical toxicology cases with results available within two hours.
