Abstract
AbstractThis paper presents a circuit‐based model of a current carrying conductor that can provide instantaneous ohmic losses under surge conditions. The model is frequency independent and can be used to calculate transient current characteristics of surges on overhead transmission lines. The theoretical current distribution under lightning surge conditions is used to demonstrate the validity of the model and the results are compared with values obtained using a finite element analysis package. There is a good correlation between the two methods with the circuit‐based model having the advantages of being less cumbersome, requiring shorter computation time and being simple to implement in transient analysis packages.
