Abstract

Abstract The reported fatalities following epidural anaesthesia are rare. A case is described here of a 63-year-old man in whom marked hypotension was noted after lumbar epidural anaesthesia for prostatectomy. Unconsciousness, apnoea and transient cardiac arrest followed, and death eventually resulted 3 days later from terminal bronchopneumonia and renal failure. The autopsy findings were consistent with a period of severe hypotension. The possible mechanisms involved are briefly discussed.
