Abstract

Facilitation and Co-ordination Therapy (F.A.C.T.) is the term applied to the modification of the techniques of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation. These adaptations have been made to meet the needs of the patient with Multiple Sclerosis. It is simply one approach to physiotherapy treatment, on an intensive scale, for this condition of the nervous system. F.A.C.T. is not a rigid concept, but a flexible mechanism in which any form of treatment that is beneficial to the patient is employed. The treatment routine is based on the system used at the Kaiser Rehabilitation Centre, in Vallejo, California. The treatment consists of gait training, mat exercises, physical therapy and self-care activities. Some of the principles of the Bobath approach to treatment of neuromuscular disorders are incorporated in the F.A.C.T. programme.
