Abstract
To tackle the unbalanced distribution of clusters problem and the 'hot spot' problem for routing in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), a balanced non-uniform layered energy efficient routing scheme (BLEE) is proposed in this paper. Here, two major contributions are involved in the design of BLEE. Firstly, driven by the intelligence (via the knowledge of nodal energy consumption) for non-uniform network layer construction, a novel numerical model is proposed to calculate the number of layers and scale of each cluster. Secondly, upon the guidance of above analysis, a combined intra/inter-cluster communication pattern is proposed to prolong the network lifetime. Both numerical and simulation results demonstrate that BLEE outperforms well known literature works, in terms of reduced energy consumption and prolonged network lifetime.
