Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic progressive disease characterized by the bodyrsquos inability to metabolized carbohydrates fat and protein leading to hyperglycaemia. A descriptive study conducted to assess the knowledge of diabetes patient regarding diabetes mellitus and to find out association between knowledge of diabetes patient regarding diabetes mellitus and selected demographic variables in selected hospitals Hoshiarpur Punjab. Thirty diabetic patients were selected by non-probability convenient sampling technique. The study was conducted in two different hospitals Narad and Modern Hospital. Data was collected by structured knowledge questionnaire and demographic proforma of diabetic patients. The collected data was analysed and interpreted by descriptive and inferential statistics. Result showed that majority of the diabetes patients 15 50 are belongs to 51 ndash 60 age group 17 56.6 of diabetic patient are males 1446.6 patients income ranged between Rs 10000- 20000- 80 are married 13 43.3 are non-vegetarian people the majority 11 36.6 diabetic patient had education up to secondary the majority 17 56.6 duration of diabetes mellitus were less than 2 years and 1136.6 duration 2 to 4 years and 2 6.6 duration were more than 4 years. Findings represent that 4 13.33 of diabetic patient have poor knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus and 26 86.66 patients have average knowledge and none of the patient had a good knowledge on diabetes mellitus. It showed that there is no association between diabetes patients on diabetes mellitus and selected demographic variables.
