Abstract

A decision theoretic model that minimizes the costs of the material selection decision process is suggested. The model describes formal methods for ranking books for selection and makes explicit assumptions of the model. Binary, Poisson, and normal distributions of feature occurrences or values are examined. For illustrative purposes, rankings of books are obtained, given selected feature values. Methods are given for implementing a system based on the model through use of machine-readable catalog (MARC) records.
