Purpose: Compassion fatigue (CF) is emotional distress experienced by providers witnessing their patients' suffering. Burnout (BO) is distress due to uncontrollable workplace factors that manifest in career and personal dissatisfaction. CF and BO can independently lead to emotional exhaustion, depression, and depersonalization, all of which can directly impact patient care.
