Abstract

This essay examines the continuing debate concerning the relationship between the news media and the social order. More specifically, it defines the concept of hegemony and it explores research supporting and criticizing the media hegemony thesis. The analysis identifies some of the central issues confronting these varied interpretations and concludes by suggesting a number of ways to refine research exploring the news media's production of hegemonic meanings and values.
