Abstract

The plain chest roentgenograms of 62 patients with congenital malformations of the pulmonic, aortic, or mitral valves, without associated circulatory shunts, were studied. The appearance of films made preoperatively and postoperatively were correlated with hemodynamic and electrocardiographic data obtained at similar intervals. No significant changes were evident in the appearance of the plain chest film, despite catheterization and electrocardiographic evidence of hemodynamic improvement after operation. It thus appears that the plain chest film is of little value in assessing the adequacy of operative treatment in congenital aortic stenosis, subaortic stenosis, or pulmonic stenosis with intact ventricular septum.
