Abstract

A simple correlation, which enables prediction of ignition delay of petroleum fuel and biofuel when they are employed in compression ignition engine, is proposed in this study. An equation was developed by including both engine and fuel factors, which enables to use for wider range of fuels in all ranges of stationary and automotive engines. With this equation, ignition delay of any fuel can be determined before it was tested in the engines. Since the equation was developed by including design factors of the engine, the effect of change in the design parameters on the ignition delay of the fuel can be determined. Developed correlation was validated by comparing the calculated values with the experimental values obtained by conducting test with the fuels. It was found that the ignition delay was predicted with less than 5% error at standard injection timing, and at retarded injection timings the percentage error is comparatively higher than that of the standard injection timing.
