Abstract

Double carbonylation of phenethyl bromide into benzylpyruvic acid in the presence of a base in hydro- alcoholic medium was investigated. The influence of various parameters, such as carbon monoxide pressure, stirring speed, the nature of the base and the presence of an alkaline iodide is reported. The role of these last two parameters in the reaction mechanism is discussed. Also, various catalysts were found to catalyse this reaction and the use of cobalt dichloride as a catalyst precursor may open opportunities for industrial applications.
