Abstract

This This paper presents an effective online Control Flow Error (CFE) detection method designed for space application on embedded systems with simple hardware modification and zero code modification. The proposed builds jump-instruction-identification-unit in the processor and connects the jumpinstruction-identification-unit to CFE detection unit which has two memories used to store static signatures. The modified system compares the static signature and the dynamic signature to detect CFE. The static signature designed for radiation-harden can be achieved based on the analysis of a Control Flow Graph (CFG) that comes from a modified GCC compiler, while the dynamic signature is calculated by CFE detection unit. The evaluation results indicate that the fault coverage reaches 90.995% with no performance overhead. The hardware overhead on area reaches 8.125%, and the leakage power increases by 8.03% compared to original system.
