Abstract

This is a case study on disaster reports by means of text analysis. News articles (201,383 tokens) on the Wenchuan earthquake in China on May 12th, 2008 were downloaded from China Daily and Reuters. Word Smith Tools 5.0 was employed to investigate the key keywords of the two media. By comparing the two key keyword lists of China Daily and Reuters, we find similarities and differences of the two media in their focuses in the disaster reports. The most obvious difference is that China Daily focused more on the government officials and rescuers whereas Reuters focused more on the victims, relief efforts and relevant economic and social issues. The differences are tentatively attributed to their different purposes and targeted audiences.
