Abstract

It is found that when the conditions of contact of metal surfaces change, the fretting-fatigue endurance of a cyclically loaded steel specimen increases with decreasing surface energy of the abradant metal. On this basis it is proposed to increase in various ways the cyclic endurance of parts which operate under fretting-fatigue conditions. A formula is suggested for estimating the yielding capacity of the abradant metal surface.
