Abstract

The following proof of a geometric con struction will help some high school or col lege trigonometry students acquire an ap preciation for the uses of complex numbers. In figure 1, consider circle O of radius r with two perpendicular diameters AB and CD. Draw MC with M as the midpoint of AO, and find E e OB such that ME = MC. We will prove that CE is equal to the length of one side of the regular pentagon that could be inscribed in circle O.
