Abstract
We have measured the proton polarization in the 40Ca(d, p 1) 41Ca 1.95 reaction at a deuteron energy of 4.8 MeV. The results are compared with the circular polarization measurements of the γ-ray from the decay cf the 1.95 MeV state of 41Ca, produced in the same reaction at the same deuteron energy by Freiberg et al. 1). A simple relationship between the proton and γ-ray circular polarizations ( P γ = −3.23 P proton) calculated with no spin-orbit distortions in the deuteron and proton channels is not verified by experiment. The disagreement, however, is small. DWBA calculations including spin-orbit distortions agree quite well with the proton polarization. We conclude that spin-orbit distortions are necessary in DWBA calculations, but their effect is not a major one.
