Abstract

For flexible manufacturing systems, closed network of queues (CNQ) models have been investigated by many researchers (3,4,5,6,7). These have been found to be both reliable and robust (8). In a-very recent study (2) a semi-open network of queues (SNQ) model based on an earlier analysis of open oueueing network has been introduced. In SNQ model, the total number of circulating parts in the system, unlike in CNQ model, need not be fixed but could also be less than that number. However, all these studies have been confined to the analysis of production function (or. throughput) of the production system. We introduce and study here several other important performance measures like variances in the proportion of busy machines, expected investment utilization function, mean queue lengths and variance of various queue lengths. Interesting comparisons are made between the results for CNQ and SNQ models. Some Buzen-type identities (1) for semi-open network of queues are derived.
