Abstract

A comparison of IR transmission, diffuse reflectance and photo-acoustic spectroscopies as techniques for quantitatively investigating the chemical reactions which occur in dibutyltin bis(butyl maleate)-stabilized PVC during thermal processing has been undertaken. Although DR and PA spectroscopies allow samples to be examined as received, they suffer from effects which limit their application to qualitative investigations only. For this particular polymer/stabilizer system IR transmission spectroscopy remains the preferred method of examination.
