Abstract

Objective: Most men with SCI are permanently anejaculatory and require the medically assisted ejaculation procedures of penile vibratory stimulation (PVS) or electroejaculation (EEJ) to obtain sperm for use in assisted reproductive technologies. There is abundant information characterizing ejaculatory success rates and semen quality in patients injured for years, however, little information is available for how soon after SCI these procedures may reliably be performed or when semen parameters reach a stable post-injury level. The goal of this study was to provide clinical guidelines for semen retrieval and semen quality in patients with acute SCI. Ejaculatory success rate and sperm parameters were evaluated in patients injured ≤ 2 years (acute) and compared to those of patients injured > 2 years (chronic).
