Abstract

The performances of PM synchronous machines depend on their magnetic core material. This paper investigates the suitability of different composite soft magnetic materials. The characteristics of the materials used are experimentally investigated both magnetically and on the basis of their microscopic properties. Two geometrically identical fractional slot axial-flux PM machines with different stator cores have been built and experimentally compared, one with a commercially available Soft Magnetic Composite material, the other with a cheap charged resin.
