Abstract

In North China were two big mountains, T'ai-hang and Wang-wu. There was an old man about ninety years old who lived on the north side of a mountain. He felt uncomfortable because of the mountain, so after discussions with his family, he decided to open a pass through the mountain. He directed his wife and children to work. Even his neighbor's widow joined them. A man ridiculed them: You are too old to do this. It is impossible, even if you spend your life on it. The old man replied: Do not worry. My children will continue; then their children will. My descendants will continue to work for this and finally, the mountain will become small. God heard that. He praised the old man's courage and spirit. So he split the mountain into two parts and made an opening and road for the old man. (Lieh Tsu, about 400 B.C.)
