Abstract

1 Reproductive allocation (RA), defined as weight of reproductive structures as a proportion of total above-ground biomass, was measured in 40 species of British grasses grown under greenhouse conditions. Reproductive structures were defined as the entire inflorescence, plus stem above the highest culm leaf. 2 RA varied from zero, in a few species which did not flower even after 2 years' growth, to over 50%
