Abstract

Cryo-embedding has been a basic technique used in routine histology for many years. There are many different methods for cryo-embedding small tissue samples. Most samples require a horizontal, level orientation to obtain optimal quantity and quality of sections from the cryo-block. Therefore, it is necessary to assure the sample is placed in a level cutting plane. This is sometimes difficult to achieve when freezing very small or thin specimens, such as nerves, or multiple samples in a single block. This comparative study will evaluate four different freezing methods that have been used for cryo-embedding small samples.
