Abstract

AbstractIn order to compare α‐hydroxyisobutyrate and atrolactate as complexing eluants for the separation of lanthanide ions on cation exchange resins, the distribution constants for a number of their lanthanide complexes were determined simultaneously at 25±0.1 ° and ionic strength 0.2 with ammonium perchlorate in aqueous solution. Column techniques were used to compare the HETP of the Tb‐complex with each ligand. Finally a comparative test separation was carried out on a mixture of lanthanide ions. In view of the results atrolactate should not be considered as a promising alternative for α‐hydroxyisobutyrate as it offers only little improvement.
