Abstract
Based on BCC corpus, with the help of Collostructional Analysis and Fisher Exact Test, this study calculates and analyzes the collostructional strength of “Noun” lexeme in Chinese synonymous double classifier constructions “X shuang/dui/fu-N”, with the aim of investigating the semantic hierarchy of “N”, prototypical meaning of each construction and their cognitive motivation respectively. The research findings are as follows: 1) classifier constructions “X shuang/dui/fu-N” share both similarities and significant differences in terms of collocation and categorization extension mechanism. 2) there exists an extension mechanism of metonymy in the extension of classifier constructions “X shuang/dui/fu-N” in addition to the four types of construction categorization extension mechanism proposed by Goldberg, namely, the polysemy links, the subpart links, instance links, and metaphorical links. 3) Though both metaphor and metonymy play an essential role in the extension of classifier constructions “X shuang/dui/fu-N”, yet the metonymy mechanism is more fundamental.
