Abstract

This 27-minute VHS TV film, accompanied by a seven-page viewer's guide and bibliography, evolved from a twoday conference on institutional ethics committees; it is somewhat disjointed because of apparent difficulties in editing. The film opens with a brief glimpse of an ongoing discussion in a simulated meeting of an institutional ethics committee, followed by a brief introduction by a commentator who appears in a number of sequences in the film. Four principal institutional ethics committee issues are discussed in the film: genesis, functions, decision-marking process, and unsettled issues. A part of the genesis or developmental background of institutional ethics committees is presented by the moderator and by John Paris, SJ, ethicist, College of Holy Cross. Functions of the committee are discussed briefly by Ellen Weiss, JD, general counsel, Boston Children's Hospital.
