Abstract

Chapter 1, “A Church between the Nguyễn and the French,” first provides an overview of Catholic religious and social structures in the precolonial era. It next addresses the expansion of missionary Catholicism during and after the French conquest, which to helped rebuild and extend the church's presence in Vietnam. It closes by exploring the relationship between Catholic missions, the rise of French colonial rule, and the changing place of Catholicism in Vietnamese society and politics.
