Abstract

This article argues that L’Aquila had a durable chronicle tradition that is normally associated with central-northern Italian city-states. Its principal feature of loyalty to and even love for the Angevin crown shows how a monarchical city could articulate a distinct civic identity, while emphasizing inclusion in the larger state. The theme’s frequent depiction probably stems from the characterization of the relationship as a bond of mutual loyalty and love.
