Abstract

This paper was presented at one of the plenary sessions of the 21st international congress of the International Confederation of Midwives in The Hague, Netherlands, August 1987. The paper describes the terrible consequences of childbirth to women in some parts of the world, it questions why this issue has not been addressed internationally and challenges midwives to be in the forefront of the fight to improve the health of women, and consequently that of their family, throughout the world.
