Abstract
A cellular automaton describing a certain heterogeneous catalytic reaction is introduced as a theoretical approach towards the investigation of pattern formation in chemical systems. The numerically obtained results demonstrate that the time evolution of this cellular automaton leads to a self-sustained organization of circular and spiral wave-like structures, even starting from random initial states.
