Abstract

Abstract: Brucellosis is a widespread zoonosis in many parts of theworld. Neurologic complications including meningitis, meningoencepha-litis, brain abscess, myelitis, radiculoneuritis, peripheral and cranial neu-ropathies,andpsychiatricmanifestationsarerarelyencountered,especiallyin children. In this report, we present a 13-year-old adolescent boy withchronic Brucella meningitis and hearing loss who was given anti-brucellosis treatment for 6 months and subsequently underwent cochlearimplantation.Key Words: chronic Brucella meningitis, child, hearing loss,cochlear implantation(Infect Dis Clin Pract 2013;21: 136Y138) B rucellosis is a multisystemic disease with nonspecific man-ifestations caused by gram-negative bacteria, Brucella spe-cies.Brucellosisremainsapublichealthprobleminmostcountriesof the Mediterranean, including Turkey, and in the Balkans, theMiddleEast,andCentralandSouthAmerica. 1 Neurobrucellosisis a rare complication of brucellosis in children. The mostcommon presentations of neurobrucellosis are meningitis andmeningoencephalitis.Cranialnerveinvolvementsareamongthemajor complications of neurobrucellosis.
