Abstract

Leiomyosarcoma of the mediastinum of unknown original organ is very rare, and there have been only seven cases in Japan and 12 cases in the Western countries so far. This time we have experienced a case of leiomyosarcoma of the posterior mediastinum. A 62-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of dyspnea and back pain. Imaging studies revealed a tumor situated in the posterior mediastinum. The tumor was suspected to aries from the trachea or esophagus. Without attaining any definitive diagnosis. the aptient was operated on. Under a right thoracotomy, we approached to the fist-sized tumor which could be easily freed from the trachea, esophagus, and large vessels and was extirpated. The original organ was still unknown. A histopathological exploration offered a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma.
