Abstract

ABSTRACT A case of colon cancer with typical ectopic ACTH syndrome was reported. The levels of plasma cortisol, corticosterone and ACTH were high, and urinary 17-KS and 17-OHCS were increased. An intravenous injection of 8 mg dexamethasone did not suppress plasma 11-OHCS. Adenocarcinoma in the ascending colon and its multiple liver metastases were composed of undifferentiated small cells comparable to those of carcinoid. The ACTH activity in primary and metastatic tumors was markedly elevated by bio- and radioimmunoassays, while the pituitary ACTH content was markedly decreased. The serotonin content was not increased in tumor tissue.
