Abstract

This article presents a critical review on various kinds of high energy absorbing materials pertinent to structural and mechanical integrity of military armor vehicles including material related technologies. It is well known that the integrity of armor vehicle obviously is of utmost importance for military planners as well as designers. The profile faced by armored vehicles is fully diverse and there are multiple requirements for armor materials. An effort was made at reviewing the energy absorbing capabilities of novel engineered materials including metals, composites, textiles and fabrics. It provide manufacturers, engineers and emerging researchers some guidelines about few promising energy absorbing materials such as Honeycomb sandwich panels that can be adopted for constructing ultimate armor bodies in the future. The aim is also to illustrate the status of research in this particular field, identify the challenges and potential areas of research. It was found that, Honeycomb sandwich panels being explored extensively owing to their lower density and superior energy absorption capacity. Further, introduction of Nano fillers such as graphene and carbon nanotubes in the application of multiphase shear thickening fluid was another noticeable trend. This review will serve as a functional piece of literature for promoting research in the particular field.
